New identity for the Dutch Government
21-12-2007
Rotterdam, 21 December 2007 - All departments of the Dutch National Government, including all 13 Ministries, will be switching to one logo and house style over the next few years. This government-wide style is to be developed by Studio Dumbar (Rotterdam). The Cabinet finalised their decision today. The inspiration for the new style was presented today by Prime Minister Balkenende during his weekly press conference. The definitive design should be complete by the middle of 2008.
For the first time in Dutch history, the Dutch government has decided to present a unified graphic identity nationwide, which will apply to all organisations that fall directly under Ministerial responsibility. These include the 13 Ministries, inspectorates and interdepartmental senders such as Postbus 51, regering.nl and Job Mobility Centre. The goal is to apply the new house style completely within the next three years.
The government is actively organising its services according to the ‘one desk concept’. The goal is to improve communication and interaction between the citizens and government, and adoption of one house style for the entire government is part of this concept. The unified house style will contribute to clarity and accessibility, where the National Government now presents a very fragmented image. Eventually, dozens of organisations and departments that currently have their own logos and styles will adopt the designs developed by Studio Dumbar.
A European tender for the development of a logo and house style for the National Government was issued twice, in 2006 and 2007. After a promising start in 2006, the project was put on hold due to the fall of the Government. The new commission in 2007 led to a competition between five design bureaus, and Studio Dumbar won the final selection.

Projects for Studio Dumbar in South Korea and Taiwan
19-10-2007
Studio Dumbar has been awarded three prestigious projects in South Korea and Taiwan. In South Korea, Studio Dumbar was selected after an international competition to develop a visual identity for the Woongjin conglomerate. In addition, Studio Dumbar was awarded the government contract for a new design of the entire signage for the South Korean road network. In Taiwan, Studio Dumbar will develop a visual identity for San Wu, an industrial enterprise.
Studio Dumbar was selected after an international competition to develop a visual identity for South Korea’s Woongjin. Woongjin is one of the country’s fastest growing conglomerates and is regarded as a firm with the potential to follow conglomerates such as Samsung, LG and Hyundai in the world market in the future. Woongjin has a strong presence in sectors including kitchen appliances, air and water purification, publishing, book distribution, fruit juices, construction and finance.
In addition, Studio Dumbar was awarded the government contract for a new design of the entire signage for the South Korean road network. This is the first major South Korean government tender in the field of design. Studio Dumbar participated in a consortium with two other agencies.
In Taiwan, Studio Dumbar will develop a visual identity for San Wu, an industrial enterprise. The company manufactures rubber V-belts for engines and conveyor belts used in industrial processes. San Wu is the leading company in Taiwan and exports to 60 countries. The object is a rebranding, including a new name that will enable San Wu to sell more products overseas under its own brand name. This is Studio Dumbar’s second project in Taiwan.
These projects illustrate that Asia is becoming an increasingly important component in Netherlands-based Studio Dumbar’s international portfolio. The agency has been involved in a joint venture in China (Shanghai) since 2006.

Allianz chooses Studio Dumbar for European project
03-10-2007
Press Release – October 3. 2007
Allianz chooses Studio Dumbar for European project
After a Europe-wide agency competition, Allianz - one of the largest financial service providers in the world - has selected Studio Dumbar to set up a new brand. The short list included four different agencies.
The project involves the launch of a direct-writer insurance company with the brand name Allsecur, which will operate via call centres as well as the web. The new organisation will begin selling motor insurance in the Netherlands in the first quarter of 2008.
A special feature in the brand development is that the web concept served as the guiding principle in building the brand identity and in positioning Allsecur. The choice for Studio Dumbar is based on a web concept that brings innovation to the insurance market in terms of communication, navigation, interaction and transaction. The total concept is based on the latest AJAX technology.
The new website is currently being tested and will be completed by the end of this year.

ADCN award 2007
12-04-2007
The professional jury of the Dutch Design an Art Director’s Association (ADCN) awarded Studio Dumbar’s illustrations for the catalogue of the Dutch Design Awards 2006 with the prestegious ADCN award 2007 in the category ‘illustration’.
In 2005 and 2006 Studio Dumbar won the ADCN silver awards for the complete editions of the Dutch design magazine Items.
About the illustrations
The theme of cups and flowers as recurring factor in the visual identity of the Dutch Design Awards was already introduced in 2003. This theme returns in the new style , but this time composed of texts and figures that refer to the history of design, to art and culture or to modern social phenomenons (burka, the Queen etc). This approach resulted in a layered design: When you look through your eye lashes, you see the cups. Then you see the competition categories (graphic design, industrial design etc.). And last but not least you discover the hundreds of small texts and figures that, each in their own way, refer to these categories as well.
These layered approch have turned this event style into a representative of ‘slow design’. ‘Slow’ because designing this way is quite labour-intensive and the spectator will need time to fully understand the depth of the work.

’Studio Dumbar’, In the series ‘Design & Designer’
More than just a letter
21-09-2006
Although the Netherlands has many TV channels, both art and culture are under-represented. This led Ad ’s-Gravesande and Kees van Twist to launch a broadcasting organization focused on these areas, through radio, television, the Internet and all other media. It does so in an inspiring way and for a broad audience.
Studio Dumbar created the name ‘C’ and designed a logo that combines several typefaces and colours into one basic shape. Both logo and style are fully alive. A different variant can be used on each occasion.
C needs subscribers in order to operate within the public domain of broadcasting. Studio Dumbar has turned such traditional items as letterheads and business cards into campaign items by integrating subscription forms. A website functions as the main channel for subscribing and will be C’s main platform until conventional airtime is available.

Studio Dumbar designs personal stamps
04-05-2006
The latest design of the Personal Stamp was issued on May 1, 2006. The difference in this design lies in the fact that the image or photo has been integrated within the stamp itself and not separated and placed next to it as it was before. Furthermore, besides the possibility to use your own title, you can also choose from different colors and typefaces.
The neutral character of the stamp gives the image or photo a beautiful reflection. The frame does not work disturbing towards the image when a lot of colors are used. It exists of an outer and inner form in a ton-sûr-ton pattern. The value of the stamp is integrated in the word Nederland, in which the Euro sign is used for the ‘e’ in Ned€rland.

Other projects involved the design of a large (1100m2) show stand for Shanghai General Motors and editorial design for TNT China.

The Dumbar Branding studio in Shanghai
A brand new KPN
21-03-2006
The world of telephony, internet and television is poised to undergo enormous and vital changes, completely altering the face of the telecommunications market. Everything will soon be IP-driven; in other words, via internet.
KPN has thoroughly prepared itself for these future changes. The necessary innovation conceived and developed by its departments of marketing and corporate communication is state-of-the-art. To bring about these changes, comprehensive research was conducted to reveal how the market is currently perceived. A new brand strategy was developed based on these research findings. The strategy was then translated into a new marketing communication concept – and a new visual identity. Following a creative competition, Studio Dumbar – once again – won the commission to bring KPN’s new identity to life. A test market was assembled and a number of creative concepts were pre-tested.
The result is a new visual identity that elicits the kind of tried-and-true confidence KPN is known and respected for, and that clearly gives the innovative and dynamic qualities the brand is known for a sound future orientation.
The style was created within an unprecedently short period of time and has been applied across the board: graphic design, interactive design, and 3-D design.

Special features of this project
The corporate identity developed by Studio Dumbar for Marlies Dekkers is a ‘visual identity’. The sense of discovery and provocation is reflected in her lingerie designs as well as in her website and photography.
The new range of lingerie designed by Marlies Dekkers incorporates the Internet address Marliesdekkers.nl/dating, thereby creating a link between the products and virtual experience via the website. The website provides an interactive platform for lingerie customers. They are invited to take part in a virtual ‘Bal Masque’ by designing their own textual mask that reveals a fantasy or message. Visitors to the website can read and respond to each other’s texts, communicate with each other, and continue someone else’s text in the form of a chain story.
