Celebrating Dutch Design

In addition a limited edition pocket book, that richly illustrates the live performances, was spread around the Netherlands during the Dutch Design Week. The book has been popping up in unexpected places… and incase you can still find one, it is yours to keep.

Cover designs for financial publications National Government

The project concerns a large series of cover designs, including those for the highlights within the budget process, such as the Budget Memorandum (Miljoenennota), the National Tax Plan and the National Financial Annual Report.
The concept for the design refers to the focus of each publication: publications on budgets focus forward with the expected expenditure and receipts, reports focus backward, showing the results of the budget year concerned.

Visual identity University of Twente
09-12-2009
In science, every step can bring a new discovery. Beyond the static and the known; continuously looking further.
With a multitude of elements as a basis for the identity, University of Twente visualises the fascination for scientific discovery. Man and technology, research and experiment form the basis. The elements are derived from actual scientific studies, and some are more abstract references. Every single element has its own form language and possibilities; the collection is very diverse. The style expresses the very essence of University of Twente: innovative and versatile.
The logo counterbalances the dynamism of the elements. Its power of typography, concluded with a full stop, presents the university as solid and academic.
This visual identity unites – much more than before, faculties and institutes can participate through the possibilities the style offers. As a result, University of Twente can manifest itself more strongly and separate logos and styles become less. This is not only an advantage for the brand University of Twente, but it also leads to a reduction in time and budget spending.

Identity for French yacht race
07-12-2009
Dutch agency designs the identity for the yacht race La Transat AG2R LA MONDIALE
After creating the design for the Tour de France team sponsored by the French insurance company AG2R LA MONDIALE, Studio Dumbar has also designed the identity for the yacht race La Transat AG2R LA MONDIALE, funded by the insurance company. It is a surprising identity for the sports and sailing worlds: colourful, versatile and eye-catching.
Paris will host the international water sports fair ‘Salon Nautique’ from 5 to 13 December. AG2R LA MONDIALE will use this opportunity to launch the new style for the yacht race, with an extensive campaign that includes 125 posters measuring up to 4 x 3 metres, which are already displayed in the area around Porte de Versailles in Paris.
The design is a further evolution of the visual identity that Studio Dumbar created earlier this year for the French insurance company. Scintillating colours and shapes are used to create a link to the imagery of water sports. The style is based on the international maritime flags representing the alphabet: a total of 26 different symbols in the 8 colours that feature in the insurance company’s house-style.
A number of these symbols and the AG2R LA MONDIALE logo have been incorporated into the new Transat AG2R LA MONDIALE identity.
The 10th edition of the La Transat AG2R LA MONDIALE yacht race starts on 18 April 2010. The yachts – featuring the new identity – will sail from Concarneau to Saint-Barthélemy.

Studio Dumbar sets up new agency: DesignDesk
08-10-2009
Studio Dumbar is an international specialist in design projects for governments, business communities and cultural organisations. Many of the brands commonly seen in the Netherlands were designed by Studio Dumbar, such as TNT Post, Marlies Dekkers (lingerie design), the Dutch national government and the Dutch police force.. Now Studio Dumbar is setting up a new consultancy that starts exactly where its services end. DesignDesk specialises in operational design. As the consultancy itself puts it: we don’t design brands, we enhance them!
DesignDesk is an independent consultancy with its own management. It is directed by Armand Kruizinga, former Commercial Director with Proforma designers and consultants. DesignDesk will begin in-house at Dumbar but, after the initial stages, will move to its own premises.
DesignDesk can implement all means of communication and projects that are set up in the course of the year; from brochures, campaigns and internet sites to 3D projects. DesignDesk will sometimes work as an extension of Studio Dumbar but will most certainly also work for customers independently of Studio Dumbar.
As Manager Armand Kruizinga explains: ‘At DesignDesk we are not concerned with designing new identities, we are concerned with implementing them effectively. We meet the requirement for high quality – an efficient process at low cost. We always seek to maintain synergy with the brand. After all, we are a subsidiary of Studio Dumbar. DesignDesk aims to function quite literally as a Desk, where various internal and external customers can confidently place their assignments. We can operate as an internal design department with all the advantages of an external specialist. You can have us compile 100 brochures a year or even outsource the whole design tasks to DesignDesk.’

AG2R LA MONDIALE
12-06-2009
3 June sees the introduction of the strategic alliance between the French insurers AG2R and La Mondiale. This entirely French affair (the company hardly operates internationally) definitely has a Dutch flavour. The logo and the total visual styling were designed by Studio Dumbar in Rotterdam.
Studio Dumbar was chosen following a pitch which, at the end of 2008, resulted in a longlist of 14 European agencies. Studio Dumbar was the only remaining foreign agency in the final creative pitch, competing with three French agencies. AG2LR LA MONDIALE chose Studio Dumbar because of the strength of their design and the chemistry between them and the agency.
In France the new identity of AG2R LA MONDIALE is expected to have significant impact on the insurance market and even on the business sector. Whereas France has a rich tradition in the fields of fashion, industrial design (cars) and political/cultural graphic design, the business sector is sadly lagging when it comes to strong brands and visual identities. The differentiating strength of this corporate identity lies in the iconic strength and simplicity of the logo, the use of photography and the consistent, colourful implementation. It creates unity in the extensive product portfolio of AG2R LA MONDIALE.
Studio Dumbar has spent the last 6 months rebranding the company. The project includes the entire corporate identity: logo, internet, intranet, brand architecture, brochures, office signage, retail exterior, poster booths, motion graphics, up to merchandising. Some of the conversion, such as the restyling of the 120 agencies throughout France, will run on for the next six months or so.
One special element of this rebranding project was the complete styling of a Tour de France team that has AG2R LA MONDIALE as its main sponsor. The entire strip for the cyclists and all other visual elements of the team (team cars, coaches, motorcycles, sponsor hoarding, flags, bidons) were designed by Studio Dumbar. In this respect AG2R LA MONDIALE will again differentiate itself. The design deviates from the style of cyclists’ clothing usually seen in the peloton, which Studio Dumbar describes as ‘a Christmas tree full of logos, names and colours’.

New identity for the Dutch Government
21-12-2007
Rotterdam, 21 December 2007 - All departments of the Dutch National Government, including all 13 Ministries, will be switching to one logo and house style over the next few years. This government-wide style is to be developed by Studio Dumbar (Rotterdam). The Cabinet finalised their decision today. The inspiration for the new style was presented today by Prime Minister Balkenende during his weekly press conference. The definitive design should be complete by the middle of 2008.
For the first time in Dutch history, the Dutch government has decided to present a unified graphic identity nationwide, which will apply to all organisations that fall directly under Ministerial responsibility. These include the 13 Ministries, inspectorates and interdepartmental senders such as Postbus 51, regering.nl and Job Mobility Centre. The goal is to apply the new house style completely within the next three years.
The government is actively organising its services according to the ‘one desk concept’. The goal is to improve communication and interaction between the citizens and government, and adoption of one house style for the entire government is part of this concept. The unified house style will contribute to clarity and accessibility, where the National Government now presents a very fragmented image. Eventually, dozens of organisations and departments that currently have their own logos and styles will adopt the designs developed by Studio Dumbar.
A European tender for the development of a logo and house style for the National Government was issued twice, in 2006 and 2007. After a promising start in 2006, the project was put on hold due to the fall of the Government. The new commission in 2007 led to a competition between five design bureaus, and Studio Dumbar won the final selection.
